Choose how long the photo stays

You choose 2 days, 5 days or “Forever” before you share. 2 days is 48 hours and 5 days is 120 hours from when you shared the photo. When the time is up, the photo goes away from the widgets, and from Home the next time the app gets the photos. A photo kept “Forever” stays until you delete it or your account.

How we delete

1. 1.Every hour on the hour we delete the photos and videos whose time is up.
2. 2.First we delete the files in Google Cloud Storage: the photo or video, and the small copy.
3. 3.Then we delete the photo from the database, with its comments, likes and who has seen it.

So when the time of a photo is up, it is gone from storage within about 1 hour. Our storage has no trash bin and no old versions, so a deleted file cannot be restored, not even by us.

Delete a photo yourself

Tap the three dots on a photo you posted, and choose “Delete photo”. The app asks “Delete this photo?” before it deletes. We delete the files at once. The photo goes away from the widgets of the others, and from Home the next time their app gets the photos. We delete the rest from the database within 1 hour. In the app you can only delete photos you posted yourself.

Files that nobody uses

If you upload a photo without sharing it, we delete the file after 24 hours. We delete a file in storage that belongs to no photo 1 to 2 hours after it was uploaded. We delete both kinds of files every hour.

When you leave a group

• •If you leave or are removed, the photos you posted stay in the group until their time is up.
• •If the owner leaves as the last person in the group, we delete the group, all photos and videos and their files at once.

When you delete your account

Go to Profile, and tap Delete account under Account. You cannot undo it. We delete this at once:

• •All photos and videos you posted in all groups, files included.
• •Your comments and your likes.
• •The invites you made.
• •Your sign-ins, notifications and the access of your widgets.
• •Groups where you are alone.
• •Your name, phone number and email address. We delete the codes you got by text message within 1 day.

If you own a group with other people in it, the member who has been in it longest becomes the new owner. If you pay for a group, it locks, and the paid time is lost. The subscription in the App Store or Google Play goes on until you cancel it there.

Copies that can exist elsewhere

These copies can exist after we delete the photo:

• •Someone in the group may have saved the photo to Photos with “Save”, or taken a screenshot.
• •The app keeps temporary copies of photos you have seen on the phone. They do not show on Home after the photo is deleted.
• •Google Cloud makes a backup of the database every day, and we keep the last 30. They hold text such as names, comments and captions, but not the photos and videos, because those are files in storage.

Questions about deletion
